We flew into Las Vegas and spent a few days at Valley of Fire (before traveling on to Death Valley National Park in California). Located about fifty miles northeast of the city, Silica Dome at Valley of Fire stood in for Veridian III from Star Trek: Generations (filmed and released in 1994). Granted, not one of the better Star Trek films - aside from being the first Next Generation film, for the most part it is significant only for the death of Captain Kirk.

After filming wrapped, the production left the bridges and scaffolding for the state park to do with what it wanted. The park supervisor told me much of it was sold for scrap metal, but one of the bridges was saved and relocated to another section of the park and is currently in use over a gulley on a trail not too far from Elephant Rock. A couple pictures are included below. A number of people have mistaken this bridge for the one Kirk died on but this is the bridge where Kirk confronts Soran after leaving the Nexus with Picard.

The trek up to the top of Silica Dome is not recommended for everyone as it gets increasingly steep, with lots of jagged, loose rocks and cliffs everywhere. William Shatner, Malcolm McDowell and Patrick Stewart wore safety harnesses (which I didn't have) that were removed digitally. Once at the top (where Kirk was buried) there is only a matter of maybe six feet diameter to stand on before it slopes off into very sharp drop-offs going hundreds of feet down. Definitely one of the more dangerous locations and all of this added to a couple of these comparison shots being slightly off just a bit.
