It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
On the scenic Highway 74, at Mile Marker 88, in Palm Desert is the location for the opening scene from It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Inarguably one of the greatest comedies ever made (that's right, I said it - INarguably). Directed by Stanley Kramer (Inherit The Wind, Judgment At Nuremberg), it was filmed in 1962 and released in 1963.

This is where Jimmy Durante's character Smiler Grogan went "sailing out there" over the edge of the highway and literally "kicked the bucket."

A ramp was built to help launch the car and was promptly removed after filming. Strangely, in almost the exact same location where the car came to rest after crashing sits the remains of another rusted out and crushed old car that looks like it has been there for decades.

Unlike other locations from the film, this one has changed very little in the past fifty-five years. I was even able to find the same rock that Jimmy Durante was laying on.

This is not an easy site to get to and I don't recommend it unless you're somewhat agile and willing to take a few moderate chances. For starters, it is off a cliffside on a busy, fast-moving highway with a blind bend nearby. There is nowhere to park except for a short, dirt turnout in the distance.

Once crossing the road there is a steep drop off at about a 45 degree angle. There are many loose rocks and boulders that could easily become dislodged while maneuvering to the site. Sharp cactus and yucca plants proliferate the area and of course you need to keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes. So yeah, it's a bit dangerous, but if you're a fan of this film and you can be careful and safe, it's a great location.
